[Deptheads] Trying to solve the Parking situation where we're at

I was not insinuating that we need to force people to do this, nor that we should not use tact. And I do know that most people who have earned the right to be called staff are completely crazy and put in really long hours. I'm one of them, after all. My whole thing was that we need to look at doing this. And if we did convince most of the volunteers to put in one hour, in groups of two or three, then no one would have to be out there for "hours". One hour is over quickly, even in the heat. Yes, we need to use tact. Of course, volunteers who have physical problems should not even be asked. But I do not see why we can't ask, tactfully, for some of the volunteers who do not have physical problems to help with this too. A lot of them would probably be okay with it, if it was only an hour or maybe two. And I have to say, I do not have people knocking down my door looking for a free way into the Con. Naturally, if you know of such people, please send them my
way. I would love to have a list of general volunteers.

Mary

The idea is good but it must be implemented with tact.

We are staff. we see things differently than other people. We do not have 150 volunteers to go stand outside.
Current volunteers signed on to perform specific tasks - gm a game, run a tourney, work desk etc. and several are not physically able or willing to stand in the heat one of these days.Basically they did not volunteer to stand outside and hold a sign so we cannot demand or expect them to. Example: 3 of my volunteers run large tourneys on saturday and show up an hour before and are there for the full 10 hours of the tourney judging, answering rules questions, arbitrating, making sure decks are legal, etc. The events end after 10 pm and they are gone. Other department have the same situation (miniatures, boardgames, rpgs, rpgas, larps, etc.) basically more than half the volunteers have no free con time from their events.

We need gophers and volunteers that specifically sign on to do the job.
Early in morning saturday til late afternoon is most vital. Have a handful of people do it and they can rotate around, work in teams at times to prevent boredom as well as singly at times etc. Working in pairs will help make the time go faster for them. Seek volunteers to do this and offer them badges. You will get volunteers. There are always people looking for a free badge to the con without having to gm or run a game.
