right now the video games are a break from the convention, not the main reason why someone attends.
Down the road it will be a destination spot where people attend just to get into the "Janice Invitational Halo 3 Battle Royale" or 
the "Gateway Guitar Hero challenge" sponsored by Gamer Graffix. Can even get a low end celebrity to attend and have gamers compete against them.

And when we attract video gamers that is new money for the convention. Add that to having another room run by a game company for online gaming (city of heroes, lineage, everquest, world of warcraft) and we are tapping new sources. And of course this also means new people selling in the dealers room. Elecronic gaming and accessories by the companies and others sellers.

Department is too formal for a con space and denotes part of an organization vs. a physical location within the hotel.   It's fun to say how minis and boardgames are located in Ballroom X, Y, Z instead of just Room X, Y, Z.   Lounge would be the equivalent as an evocative title. 
 
There would still very much be a "Video Game Department" in regards to staff positions within the convention hierarchy and I could see that staff expanding as the popularity of the Lounge, as the term for the actual gaming location, expands with more gamer hours.
 
As for planned events, I am sure if the Lounge becomes popular, you will be getting GMs asking to run tourneys, special events and even demos there in the future.
