Absolutely!
Anyone who is Special Guest should know in advance and we need to discuss where they want to become involved whether tourney / demo / seminar.
I am not thinking about OrcCon as much as future convention planning and how we should have a clear definition of expectations and perks around the Guest of Honor vs. Special Guest title vs. vs. GMs who are Creators. Having three clear tiers would be an advantage for future event planning and marketing.
My goal is that industry notables who do arrive don't feel odd if they don't have a status when they are doing us a favor with stuff like demos.

Just be sure to check with each of them, before you list them that way. Some (i.e. John Wick) may not like to be called that if he hasn't been asked yet. Some might be annoyed if they show up, find out in the Con Book "Oh Hey, did you know I was a Special Guest?" They might feel like we are Marketing on them with out even been communicated to about it first.
Also, I really need to know who these people are, so I can treat them right at the convention. In addition to getting a badge, I should be coordination possible seminars, and making sure they have a room etc. I've had no communication with Ed, to find out what his needs might be, because I wasn't informed about him. As for John Wick, I thought we were going to aske him and a few other Independate RPGers to come as "Special Guests" for the next con and do seminars together.

I agree with Eric Burgess. Do we have a written definition of what is a Guest of Honor and what is a Special Guest for Strategicon? I think a clear written definition is important. Included in this definition should be the amount of games / seminars run that is expected from the Special Guest.
I do not see any problem with Guest of Honor as the prime focus and then a list of Special Guests by department noted and listed. Eric is right that Kubla has an impressive array of Special Guests and I do not know if Kubla does anything beyond giving them a free badge. I do not know if they get a room discount or other perks.
In general, I suspect that the Special Guests will be very open to run extra events / demos / seminars and we should use them to the advantage of our guests. It may even be useful to encourage the GMs to run games created by the special guest we know will be attending.
Just like the Kniziathon, other such style events could be implemented. In the case of Tom Jolly, we could do a Jollython, but also could just promote the play of his games by getting them listed as general events. In the case of John Wick, I am sure he would be excited to see some 7th Sea, L5R, L5R CCG, Cat the RPG and other stuff happening that he wasn't running himself as a token of honor to the Special Guest. One of the biggest hoots as a game designer is seeing other people playing your game.
Such ego-stroking would go a LONG way because many of these Special Guests have blogs and extensive fan contact where they will promote the con to the larger gamer community. And it would not cost us a dime.

Kublacon routinely has a list of about a dozen special guests and yet most of them come every year. I believe one of them is the "Guest of Honor" (as in, we paid to have this one big name come one time) and the rest are special guests (special badge and special events noted). So - Steve Jackson is the "Guest of Honor", Wick, Ed, and perhaps the other Play with the Creator folks could be 'Special Guests'. Anyone who could potentially draw attendees because they have a fan base should be noted as such.
I tend to think this is a pretty good way to go.

Rob you are the marketing guy. Should John Wick get a Special Guest status? He's written some extremely popular games...

No offense to Ed, but he better be some sort of attendee draw greater than some of the Play with the Creator guys.
Patrick Kapera has GM'd for us a few times and his games are certainly far bigger sellers than Ed's stuff, just to name one. Same with John Wick. Neither had Special Guest status to my knowledge.
