[Deptheads] Convention Location

That reminds me...

We might make an effort to stress the 105 freeway and Sepulveda as access roads, and avoid mentioning much about Century when it comes to directions to the con and restaurants (sorry Carl's Jr.).

That all makes sense...except I don't know if we're going to get anyone to truly believe?it's a 'nice' area as long as driving down Century Boulevard still gives you the stuttering porno sign, "Live Live Nude Nudes".

Hey folks -

I would just suggest that everyone remember that people have already looked around for alternate locations, and the cupboard is quite bare when it comes to hotels with enough space for gaming.?

Mark and I recently spoke about this; for example, the big, big nice-looking hotels in Long Beach do not have much in the way of meeting rooms, since they assume they would just host people going to events across the street at the convention center.? The Orange County airport were FAR too expensive.? I don't know how well we've looked into Burbank (where a lot of SF cons are held), West LA or the Valley -- I think it speaks volumns though, that Rocky, who lives in L.B. and owns a game shop in Burbank, was never close to moving the cons to either of these neighborhoods.

Eric A. could probably shed more light on what has actually been researched and quoted.

Also, please note that the several blocks we are moving back west do make a difference in neighborhood ambience.? Head north on Sepulveda, and you are in middle class Westchester.? Head south on Sepulveda, and after driving past aerospace highrises and a golf course,?you are soon in high-rent Manhattan Beach fergoshsakes...? Far fewer street people and panhandlers.

Ciao, babies,

Eric N.

I did a lot of research on moving to a different area, there are very few hotels that have the space we need. ?We rely on hotels making money off the rooms? to keep our costs down. Convention centers are out of budget range. These are the hotels I found that have enough space for our convention. If you know of one not on this list, email me with it. I am trying to keep this list up to date, just in case.

Hilton Anaheim

Hyatt Regency Long Beach

Hyatt Regency Century Plaza

Hyatt Regency Westlake Plaza

Marriott LAX

Marriott Anaheim

Marriott Newport Beach

Westin Bonaventure

As a parent who has brought kids to the con from age 2 to 18, I never once considered the outside area as a factor.? ?The best thing was the Kids Games run by the lady who sells her fantasy art in the dealer room. (I think), and the kids D&D game. ?I think "Family Friendly" would be every department having kids only tournaments.

This was one of the reasons i was pushing to move the convention to Ontario, nearer gamer-rich Riverside area.?

?

MAYBE, we might look into moving ONE of our conventions to the Ontario area IF there is a problem with the hotel at some point in time.? I'm not saying make it happen, I'm just saying it would be a good solution adn research IF we get shut out of the LAX hotel sometime.

If we're truly serious about aiming for families, long term plans might be to move the con to family-friendly Orange County. ??I'm just saying that having the con at a hotel near crummy-neighborhood LAX on a street full of strip clubs isn't exactly a family environment. ?Plus, since real estate in Los Angeles urban area is so high, the middle-class family audience that would show up at the con doesn't live anywhere close. ?Plus, if we were in Orange County, we'd be that much more accessible to bedroom communities in san diego, riverside and san bernardino counties. ?When the con started in the L.A. Area all those years ago, it was a very different demographic that lived in the city. ?We might need to reconsider our location in the coming years and make the jump to where our intended attendees actually live.
