Hello all, and especially Heather and family.
First off - hope your guys hit by the flu are recovering well.? I'm sure everyone will keep them in their thoughts.
It does seem that having a big mob of hundreds of people together is a microbial ground zero.?
The scary thing is not just people getting ill, but people getting emergency-room/hospital level sick.? In 2006, if I remember correctly, the Aldrich's got hit badly at Polycon, too.? We don't hear about the John Doe's and Joe Blow's that go home sick.? I especially hate the idea of people putting in tons of volunteer time and THEN going home with a really bad case of the flu as well.
We can't police every hygenically challenged person at the con who isn't washing their hands, etc., but I think there are a few simple things we can do.
1) Remind our staff and volunteers?about how common the common cold and flu have been following conventions.? Forewarned is fore-armed.? This need not turn everyone into hypocondriacs, but an extra hand washing or two probably would help the odds.
2) Have some hand sanitizer bottles for the reg desks and HQ's.? Nice to have handy?after a coughing 50-year-old or runny-nosed 8-year-old has been hanging around, shuffling through sign-up sheets, etc...
3) A few boxes of the little pre-packaged hand wipes to have around at open gaming?? If we get a few people using them, that's a few less sets of hands likely to spread microscopic varmints.
Cost?? $10-$15 dollars a con?? I'd rather pay that than see friends and volunteers badly sick with flu.
Get well soon, Devi and David!!!

We are not ignoring this guys, but I we came home from the convention with both Devi and David very sick.? David went to CHOC (Children's Hospital of Orange County) yesterday with a fever of 103 for the past 4 days.? His chest x-ray was negative for Phenmonua, but they have put him on anit-biotics just the same.? Devi's doctor says he has the flu, but he is in bed an on several meds including an inhaler.??? Whatever this is, also took out one of our attendees from the convention.? Our Englishman Paul Allwood, fainted on the airplane home on Tuedsday.?
?
We'll work on contacting additional people this weekend.
