[Deptheads] Blizzard computer room

Victor, what was the feeback of the Blizzard people who came to OrcCon?
How high up the food chain are these guys? Are they scouts or are they decision makers?
What is the goal for their WoW room? What do they want to accomplish? Obviously, it is not to sell more WoW since that is a global operation and even if every person at the con signed up for WoW, those numbers would be a drop in the bucket.
Who are the backup game companies?
Also, what time frame are we talking about? Gamex is 3 months away. Can anything really happen in that time frame? Or should we really be thinking about OrcCon 2008 in regards to video game companies?

I personally know several blizzard staff and have been talking to them in person and by phone about coming out (they showed up in august to support the world of warcraft game).Particulars and the such have not been discussed- the con itself and what it can do for them and their name is the main concern. Their name is golden and they will not just throw it out there.
They care about how the con appears and is run before they want to be associated with it computer game wise. I will know more next week. If I can convince them this
venue will work for them then I will pass the torch to those that negotiate actual space, hotel rooms, needs etc. I do not discuss those things with companies and people I know. I only open the door and get them to the welcome mat.
I have backup game companies interested if blizzard is not interested.
For a large company to spend the time, money and effort to come to our convention (they get asked by many cons) they have to see a professional environment and know the venue will benefit them. Plus many many months in advance notice so they can advertise it and adjust their yearly appearances.
Basically we need to have our "house" in working order before many companies and personalities will see appearing at our convention as a benefit to them.

I wanted to spin this off to another thread.
When we say that Blizzard might run our computer room (which would be great and I would then totally support the video game room being in high-profile San Jose) what are we giving them? Do they want a seperate admission fee? (That might be appropriate considering that their BlizzCon is an event that was sold-out and run like clock-work). If they do want a seperate admission, what does that mean to us?
I've been dealing with Blizzard on a major project for two years. One thing has become clear - these people won't just lend their name out to anything. We have to display professionalism dealing with them. To that end, who on our end is dealing with them and are we giving them everything they need? (I'm just pointing out that Eric/Janice/Tim needs to know this, not me).
Once we cement a laison, as con co-owner and manager, Eric should make sure to at least represent the con to whatever Blizzard VIP he needs to. These people are a multi-billion dollar company and if we need to get on our knees and ask them "pretty please" lets do that. This could potentially bring in hundreds of additional attendees.
/John Ptavia mode off.
