Further feedback. I ran into a friend of mine who I know has been going to
Strategicon for several years now. He and his wife always enjoyed the
convention as their thrice a year vacation away from home. They looked
forward to playing in the RTTs on a consistant basis, and then gaming till
the wee hours of the day in the Board gamers area.
I was at the GW battlebunker and he was there, and seemed to be avoiding my
site nor saying hello. Given how much I was envangilizing on the local
miniature boards and the groups that we participate in, I guess I shouldn't
have been surprised, since he wasn't at the convention.
So I approached him "hey, how y'a doing, I didn't see you at Strategicon
this past con...blah, blah, genial conversation opener".
He started to say "Well my wife had to work ...." paused, and then was
honest with me: "Actually what is was that last convention we went the
rooms and the hotel were total pooh (he used a harsher word). We have
always enjoyed going to Strategicon, and looked forward to spending the
weekend at the convention, but we hated the rooms and the venue. Until
Strategicon moves, we won't be back".
Now he and his wife are heavier individuals, and given the lack of elevators
in the hotel it is a major hurdle for them to go anywhere in the hotel that
isn't on one floor without the use of elevators. Even the "gradual" steps
between the first and second floor of the Radisson is a hardship.
He is sincere in this opinion, and I know that he is a vocal person, so
bends the ear of many people.
If this had been the only person in the miniature gaming community, then I
would agree with Eric N's dismissal of a single misinformed crackpot. But I
am running into a brick wall among the community on this!
I admit it, I'm a fanboy (or fangirl), and even if you held the convention
at the local YMCA, I would probably still attend, but not everyone is like
that.
