I just got off the phone with Mike Rizzo (our RPGA guru) and Katie at Porter Novelli who is doing the PR for WotC's 4e launch. We are GO for doing demos and preview of 4e at Gamex. We will not be able to get any designers as special guests.
We will be getting artwork and logos for the tri-fold flyer and the on-site convention booklet.
We will be getting the Player's Handbook cover art as well for use. It would make an awesome cover for the convention book. Katie is also working on additional collateral advertising for us, such as posters and banners.
We will be getting the "Escape from Sembia" 4 hour adventure and the "Dungeon Delve" 30 minute demo. Mike is speaking to Chris Tulach at WotC to determine how many box sets we will be receiving. Mike is also friends with people at G4 TV (he was their DM) and he will be speaking with them about dropping by Gamex for some media attention. And maybe getting Wil Wheaton to come along too.
Our goal is for RPGA to host Sembia events all day Saturday and Delve events throughout the weekend. The Delve events should be hosted in that central foyer / demo space for maximum foot traffic since they are essentially 30 minute pick-up games.
We will not be getting any actual 4e books for charity auction or sale. However, we need to get the vendors primed. The Dungeon of Dread minis box comes out in April and the D&D 4e preview Keep on the Shadowfell comes out May 20. Mike says he has at least 10 GMs ready to do events, we should have over 300 people trying out this game so there will be customer interest. If possible, some vendors may want to offer discounted pre-orders for the 4e core books that hit the shelves June 6th.
At this time, no concentrated effort from WotC is being put to launching the D&D minis. I would love to see us doing demos of that as well through our collectibles. I see a lot of potential crossover appeal since they use a very similiar rules set.
As with OrcCon, our best marketing dollars were spent on getting the tri-fold in as many game stores as possible. With the D&D logo prominent on the Gamex tri-fold, we should push to have the flyers in comic book stores and book stores as well.
And a big THANK YOU to Mike Rizzo for making this happen!
- Robert
BTW, there are 8 foot high D&D statues used at GenCon that are in storage in LA. Katie says its expensive for WotC to bring them out, but Mike and I will continue our begging.
