I understand that no one said we should force volunteers to put in one hour outside holding the sign... but asking most the gms and volunteers to put in one hour of sign holding does not reflect good on our convention nor does it motivate them to want to come back and volunteer. That is what I meant by tact. We need to be professional in how we handle the volunters for parking and realize there is alot of liability involved if we are assissting loading and unloading so it cannot be chaotic.

Volunteers for parking duty needs to be established.
It would be logistics chaos to randomy grab volunteers at the convention. Most volunteers will be shopping, eating, or in an event when they are not running an event. Some will show up right before their event. Gms only need to be available to us for the events they volunteered to run. That is most of our volunteers. Gms.
There is no volunteer area to find volunteers. They are all over the con. Someone would have to go from room to room and look for people wearing volunteer badges that were not in an event or running one. It is not like I can walk into the boardgame, miniature, computer, or collectables room and interupt events to get volunteers. That is not tactful.
If we do not have assigned volunteers for parking where do you find "available" willing volunteers during the convention? You don't unless they are in your department.

The best way is to have volunteers assigned to do this and staff members can oversee it (and help too).

And there are always people looking to get a free badge to the convention. Boardgames, collectables, and miniatures always have volunteers contacting us to run events and I am sure role playing does to. If I didnt live 3000 miles away I would ask around my local groups and stores.

We need general volunteers.
Who handles general volunteers? If Artemis wants to general volunteer for saturday who does she contact? Mark Hyman would be a good for this (or Eric Nyquist if he wasn't loaded with stuff already). Mary or Tracy could handle it since registration is the home base of the convention.

Any way we slice it - it has to be done in an organized manner.
hey..maybe radisson can give us some people to help hold signs since they bent us over on everything else. Wishful thinking. As if.

I was not insinuating that we need to force people to do this, nor that we should not use tact. And I do know that most people who have earned the right to be called staff are completely crazy and put in really long hours. I'm one of them, after all. My whole thing was that we need to look at doing this. And if we did convince most of the volunteers to put in one hour, in groups of two or three, then no one would have to be out there for "hours". One hour is over quickly, even in the heat. Yes, we need to use tact. Of course, volunteers who have physical problems should not even be asked. But I do not see why we can't ask, tactfully, for some of the volunteers who do not have physical problems to help with this too. A lot of them would probably be okay with it, if it was only an hour or maybe two. And I have to say, I do not have people knocking down my door looking for a free way into the Con. Naturally, if you know of such people, please send them my
way. I would love to have a list of general volunteers.

Mary

The idea is good but it must be implemented with tact.

We are staff. we see things differently than other people. We do not have 150 volunteers to go stand outside.
Current volunteers signed on to perform specific tasks - gm a game, run a tourney, work desk etc. and several are not physically able or willing to stand in the heat one of these days.Basically they did not volunteer to stand outside and hold a sign so we cannot demand or expect them to. Example: 3 of my volunteers run large tourneys on saturday and show up an hour before and are there for the full 10 hours of the tourney judging, answering rules questions, arbitrating, making sure decks are legal, etc. The events end after 10 pm and they are gone. Other department have the same situation (miniatures, boardgames, rpgs, rpgas, larps, etc.) basically more than half the volunteers have no free con time from their events.

We need gophers and volunteers that specifically sign on to do the job.
Early in morning saturday til late afternoon is most vital. Have a handful of people do it and they can rotate around, work in teams at times to prevent boredom as well as singly at times etc. Working in pairs will help make the time go faster for them. Seek volunteers to do this and offer them badges. You will get volunteers. There are always people looking for a free badge to the con without having to gm or run a game.
