Thanks for the posting Robyn. I was just getting on to give everyone the
numbers from this year's Demos. This is the demo run and the number of
people who participated in them. Each was run twice (2 three hour sessions)
with the exception of Uncharted Seas and 40K which were run only one session
each.
Warhammer 40K - 2
Warhammer Fantasy - 3
Wings of War - 5
Flames of War - 12
General Quarters - 4
Uncharted Seas - 10
Warmachine - 8
WWII AE - 4
Total of 39 actual participants (a few tried a few different games). Now
we know a bit more about what we want to do/accomplish, my team is already
working on ways to improve visibility, number of demos, etc. so Orccon we
can improve on these initial numbers.
It should also be noted that 5 of the people who did demos with us joined
us at night for M&M and/or GQ because of their exposure to miniatures games
and they wanted to try a full blown event. All seemed to have a good time
and asked what scenarios we were going to have at Orccon.
I am hoping that the Dealer's Room also felt a little impact in sales on
miniatures with the Demos, but now we have a start we will be sure to let
Janice know all the demos we are doing so she can get with the sellers to have
product available on site.
I am looking forward to everyone's feedback at the next meeting and ideas
from all on how we can make what seems to be a good thing even better.

Gateway has now come and again. On Sunday, I gave three AE-WWII demos to
four people, in addition to fielding questions from interested onlookers.
The Strategicon folks used the concept of a "Miniatures Bootcamp" this
year, in which several miniatures games were demonstrated side by side. I
thought this worked out very well this year - there was much more foot traffic
in this area of the convention as people were dropping by often to play and
learn some quick miniature games. One of the demos I gave was to a father
and his high-school age son who had never played a miniatures game before
but were grabbed by the AE-WWII board I had set out. They had a great time
and decided to purchase their first miniatures games (albeit it was Space
Hulk, not AE-WII, as they had read about it beforehand). I'll take creating
some new miniature wargamers as a small win.
I'll definitely be back at Strategicon/Orccon February, and hope the
convention sticks with the Miniatures Bootcamp. I plan to spend one day on
demos, but hopefully one of the nights I'll schedule a game for people with
existing armies...or even a small tournament. If any current players think they
would be interested in a game and/or tournament, please let me know!
Phil
