[Deptheads] SoCal Smackdown (Was: Get games up ASAP!)

Polly and I did some searching, and came up with very little. As RJ said,
their web presence is virtually nonexistent. The fact that they're hosting a
Regional Invitational Qualifier (Is that a qualifier for an Invitational
event, or an invitation-only Qualifier for a grand championship?) is good,
but the fact that they're going up against us, time-wise, is bad for both of
us... and I'd have to say that it's worse for them than for us.
I'd never heard of Warmachine (I assumed that it was talking about
Warstorm), but I can see that it's by the same people who do
Monsterpocalypse, and I've heard of that. It sounds interesting enough, but
I stopped playing miniatures games about 15 years ago, when I lost all of my
40k/Necromunda figures. The cost of (re-)entry and the time commitment make
them unappealing these days, for the exact reasons you mentioned. I don't
even play Talisman at the convention any more, and I really LIKE Talisman.
If there's any way to manage it, we should try to get in touch with the
operators of SoCal Smackdown. I know it's extremely unlikely to get a date
changed once it's announced (Califur had the same problem for its first
convention - once they realized that Memorial Day put them in conflict with
many, many other events, they realized that it was too late to change.
They've (obviously) gone with other weekends, now), but there's still a
chance that they can, and it'd be good for the two conventions to cooperate
(or at least avoid stepping on each other's toes), rather than try to
compete over the same limited pool of players.
As a side note, SoCal Smackdown is also the name of a Roller Derby event...
the convention managers might want to consider a name change to something
that's somewhat less evocative of professional wrestling. IMO, it smacks of
immaturity, but YMMV.

"Would you like another drink, sir?" asked the bartender.
"I think not," replied Descartes, and promptly vanished.
