Good job in the past but let's look at 2012 and 2013 since 2012 is filled in with guests of honor already.
There are handfuls of gaming rock stars out there----those that the
average gamer recognize; not just us that deal with the gaming industry
alot
know .We know prestige names and top designers but this does not make
them the only choices for guests of honor for an entire year over someone with a
currently hot game or
someone that most people know or want to hang out with/meet at a con.
It's about the attendees. There are top names in all gaming and fandom
but a person that does not play historical miniature games wouldn't know
miniature game people to have them considered before we lock in GOH.
That is why I asked
who is final word before someone is "inked" in as a guest of honor. Our
guest of honor process should be unbiased including euro designers, usa
designers, wargaming, Rpg, miniature, video game, larp, etc. all
considered. Mix it
up. A euro-designer guest of honor flown in from germany or england for
every con we have in 2012? So don't bother ask or suggest anyone else
to be a guest of honor til sept. of 2013? Once a year- yes...3 times a
year- no. All other guests pay their own travel?
We don't budget
guests by dept. yet so guests of honor are strategicon guests of honor
and the ones we have had before have been good but let's look to the future.
The amount of people in boardgaming
does not represent an individual game. Are all of them playing
the same game? Is that the only game they are all playing all weekend?
Largest attendance as a "dept." does not speak for individual games.
Warhammer,
magic the gathering, Pathfinder rpg, house of blooded larp, rock band,
dungeons and dragons, vampire ccg, specific hmgs miniature battles,
paint and take, and are you a werewolf all have largest crowds each
convention outside of "hot game of the moment" and special tourneys.
Our
guest of honor criteria shouldn't be "this department is biggest so
they get the guests of honor for next 2 years".
Miniatures has
grown and is still growing but hard for most to see since miniatures are
everywhere due to spacing issues. The paint and take is in one area on
2nd floor, the 120+ warhammer players are on 2nd floor outside of
traffic flow, large scale minis are wherever, and the other events are
on first floor in semi-darkness even with stand up lamps. But if growth
continues where do they go when we have no space? Some branched off to do socal smackdown and plan other cons. As norm and chris know we could
have 500-900 pokemon players at
our con but we don't have the space. They talked to us about it a few
times but we
can't hold that many so they continue to have their events each month
including being opposite of us on holiday weekend
saturdays. Norm sees them. And if we had 1000+ people in ccgs because
of pokemon I
wouldn't say we invite different ccg guests of honor from japan or
europe each
con. Mix it up with our guests of honor. We should fly top miniature and other names to our con
too as guests of honor and get some usa game designers like Donald X
(Donald X. Vaccarino- designer of dominion). Video game vips, games
workshop guests, and guest gms would rock too. More guests overall and
continue to grow as an awesome 4-day convention with something for
everyone and no one feels second class or unwanted at our con.
