I'll be replying to you off list to avoid clutter, but I believe we can be
there for April.

John, I think you will find that Fluorescent is the worst of options. they
are heavy if you use the standard fixtures with ballast and the length of
exposed tube is prone to breakage. Having some background in lighting and
transport of same from my 30 year career in the film biz I have found the
cheap "clip on" lamps you have seen me use are best. They are cheap, light,
small, and if you put the new style twisted fluorescent tube in them they are
not hot. I bougth some extra "zip cord" to extend the plug cords to 15'.
Good luck to you and I cant wait to se what you guys come up with.

Will you guys come up to our HMGS/PSW convention in April? Love to see
your group part of it. I am attaching a flyer for the con to this email and
would love to see any and all of those on this list print a few to hand to
friends or take to their local shop or hobby store. We lost our convention
manager and it has fallen on me to get the word out. A bigger better HMGS/PSW
convention directly helps miniature at all the Strategicaon events.

We're already looking at doing the same thing for the Hong Kong Cavaliers
events....exploring different lights that will put out less heat is a key
factor in this as well as transportability. Thinking fluorescent lights
right now.

Great idea Bill - "Imitation is the greatest form of flattery" or
something like that, right?...:-)

No dean that's all the light there are since that was original a lounge
area. The lights you guys provided were a huge help and several of the GM's
are now following my lead and bringing their own lights since the area is
amply supplied with outlets. In My opinion I like the moodiness of the area
and light just lighting up my table area add to the dramatic effect.

By the way I'm getting a lot of flack from some members who say we are
supporting the "Strategicon" event more than "Smackdown" which is true but
then as I tell them has Smackdown supported us? no? well Strategicon has and
continues to do so and you are always free to game where ever you want to.
To bad we cant just be one big happy family....

I will point out, for the record, that the board gaming room also started
out with 'mood lighting' - the hotel only had about 40% of the overhead
lights on Friday afternoon. We finally got the rest turned on, after a guest
complained, the hotel took a couple of hours to find someone who knew how
to turn on the extra lights. Perhaps there are more lights in that section,
that weren't being used?

Jim,
Thank you for the praise and constructive criticism. The Sheraton Hotel is
a much better venue than our last one and we a very happy with it. The area
for miniature wargames was once a restaurant and bar and thus we inherited
their "mood lighting". The Strategicon staff purchased the lights we used
and they are an improvement, but the staff and I will look into ways to
improve the lighting. It is nice being off the main lobby where a lot of
visitors can see what we are doing. Last convention we recruited an officer
in the California National Guard who was staying in the hotel for a
conference. As far as the space is concerned, I am looking at the floor
plan and am going to make a recommendation to the Strategicon Team for
their
consideration. Thanks again for your input. The convention is growing again
and that has all of us in a good mood. However, that guy said a long time
ago, "Don't get cocky kid!" and that is always good advice.

Hello Harmon,

Just sending a quick follow-up note regarding the Orccon convention of
a few weekends ago. I think the turnout for miniature wargaming was
very good, and I believe we will be back to run more games in the
future. I do have a few suggestions:

1 - Improve lighting. A short walk across the lobby to the board
gaming room served to quickly reveal how nice it was to be able to
see. Having said that, I understand that miniatures benefit from the
"drama" of the lower ambient lighting and flood lamps, but the current
situation is a bit too dark. The little stand-up lamps just didn't cut
it.

2 - More space for miniature wargaming (and maybe for all gaming).
Enough so that people can set-up at crunch time and leave their set-up
whilst they advertise the pending game as players from other games
become available (a common way of drumming up players). Possibly have
two miniature gaming zones which can be collapsed down to a single
zone during lower traffic periods?

Overall, I think it is good to have the miniature gaming happening
right off the lobby where it has good line of sight. What they need
over in that "corner" is good visibility. Most people are so loaded
with gear that they cannot bring their own lighting, and the tables
are currently a crap-shoot depending on whether they are right under a
flood lamp - or not.

Anyway, best of luck and please feel free to write if you have any
questions.
