[Deptheads] SoCal Smack Down is moving weekends

To be honest, what I said earlier is true. I'm not saying no to Henry
because of the convention, I'm saying no because I don't want any more
retailers. I will be filling the Dealer Room with manufactors and distributors of
non-gaming products (looking for a cool shirt vender now). We have 6
retailers now, that is enough for a convention.
As a convention booth, I have MANY independent reports of their staff
talking down our conventions at their store, other stores, and gaming
gatherings. I will not have the atmosphere of the Dealer's Room poisoned by someone
talking down our convention on our own turf after all the work I'm putting
in to build it up.
If Neoncon, Polycon, Kingdomcon, any of them talked down our convention
they would get the same treatment (especially Polycon).
If they come to us and ask, it will be considered fairly with recent
to-that-moment history taken into account.

Noted. John? Why not ask them for little postcard like flyers to toss
onto the regular "other upcoming cons" table? Maybe allow one of their reps to
come man that booth? Just a thought. :-)

Briefly, they jumped onto our weekend two years ago, were cautioned it
would be foolish, mostly tried to draw organizers from us with little success,
caused a lot of misery for some minis folks (board games didn't notice -
their efforts were lousy), inflated their attendance numbers and now they
are admitting defeat through this change. When they reached out to Heather
and Devi (the OCBG organizers and Strategicon staff at the time) to organize
their board games, I told them if they shifted weekends, we could work with
them and everyone would be happy and if they didn't, no one wins. They
didn't respond and Strategicon as a whole has been simply polite about it as
they struggled and we grew. As Aldrich said, taking the high road has paid
off. With the change, everyone wins - the community and both cons.
I'll admit to laughing pretty hard when I saw Shawn's e-mail but it wasn't
in front of anyone except the cat. Thankfully, she talks to almost no one
in the gaming community so my mocking reference to SoCal SmackedDown will
stay with her.

I guess I don't understand the gloating over them moving their con dates?
Were they trying to directly compete with Gateway? I'm just trying to get
a feel for what's going on... >_> Sorry, I'm teh n00bsauce.

Actually John, we may want to do that... give me a couple of weeks before
you do anything

Them moving to after us is only going to hurt them more. On the honest
side, I would call them and offer them a Gateway Dealer Table, but I am
limiting our retailers to what we have now and going after more manufactors.

I agree about not being involved, but still it is hard not to feel pretty
good about this...

(and I suggest people not them. I suspect there's some crow about to be served
in certain circles, and we should not get involved).
