[Deptheads] We need more volunteers

Another thing to keep in mind in all this is to remember the reason many of
us are on Staff -- to serve and grow the hobby. The compensation we get as
Staff members doesn't make this an economic decision (as $/hr), but it's
our desire to promote something we love and want to share. It's no
different with volunteers. I think we should also play up this aspect of
volunteers. The next time your local NPR radio station does their pledge
drive listen to the way they talk about what it means to be a member: sure
you get a tote bag or coffee mug or tickets to some event, but that is
secondary to the symbolic gesture of supporting something that you care
about. All that said, the direct incentives for volunteers are great and
let's come up with some new ideas. But don't loose sight of the importance
of community and people wanting to support it.
What this would look like is thank you messages something like "Thank you
for supporting our hobby across Southern California and providing enjoyment
to people just like you." Make it about something bigger than themselves.
