Starting a business on groupon involves dedicated time towards it and several additional things would have to be implemented :
--redemption instructions on our site
--a strategicon phone line for groupon customers to call (and someone to man that phone line)
--Set up a dedicated email address for Groupon customers to email and get replies
--Set up a system to take groupon codes online
--Set up a system to take groupon codes at the convention (we can do this with mobile device- scan coupon with phone that has the groupon software downloaded)
--someone dedicated to monitoring the groupon forum and answering any questions for startegicon
And we must generate a seperate receipt for each customer that uses groupon (online and offline) showing the total before groupon, circle the groupon discount, and show the total after groupon.
ALSO---Groupon gets 50% of each Groupon purchase. So if we sell a $40 badge for $20 with groupon we only get $10 from it (groupon gets the other $10). Nomatter the discount they get 50% of the sale.
When the groupon expires we get paid from groupon for the groupon sales (they got paid when the person used groupon and will send us payment for total when it ends).
ALSO--There is a minimum number of groupon sales that must be met before the groupon expires or the groupon is invalid and the customers get charged the amount they previously were discounted....this is why the groupon says to
pass it on to friends etc. So if we didn't sell the minimum number of groupon purchases we have unhappy ones that did that find themseves charged the full amount a month later.
San Lee does Comikaze and last year it debuted with over 40,000 attendees and 300 vendors. It is run thru his company Pow entertainment with Regina carpinelli (probablly spelled her name wrong) who owns comikaze entertainment.
They have established for profit business and company with other products and services that use groupon.
Also note they are starting groupon months in advance of the convention and they have the volume.
Groupon is a great idea for a family day...but it has to be done months before a con (like Gateway in sept), updates to website to take groupon, software on a phone at con to take groupon at reg desk, someone to handle the groupon forum, email,
and phone calls from groupon customers, and someone to organize and do the groupon, talk to the groupon rep, do the paperwork, and juggle the numbers and make sure we have a minimum that can be met and we can take at least a 75% loss on all
groupon tickets sold. The months of groupon advertising would be worth the 75% loss of revenue from family badges for sunday family day if it got us more new customers and our name splashed everywhere by groupon.
So if we wanted to do groupon we should start with Gateway in september and start the process immediately after Gamex ended.
