[Deptheads] Potential Guest

Please make sure that any potential theming avoids the appearance of a "specialty" con.

In the late '90s or so, there was a lot of miscommunication involving special events and themes, which made specific cons look like exclusive events - an RPG con or board-game-only, etc...

We need to make sure that we do not look as though we are putting on "niche" conventions.

Theming our convention is more than a 1 or 2 person decision-- ownership and management have to discuss it a year in advance then get marketing and art dept. involved while setting a theme. Next get department heads involved when a theme is set for games, events, guests, vendors, etc.
Art and marketing will be involved from the ground up on all themes.
We have to remember that unlike all other convention we are 3 times a year. They have a year to plan a themed convention...we have 6 months, then 3 months, then 3 months. Once orccon hits it is bam, bam, bam. We don't work on one great con a year--we do 3.
We never have a year to prepare. Already we are less than 6 months away from orccon 2013....and when you factor in holidays we have about 4 months to schedule and prepare 3 conventions for 2013 and get orccon ready.
Theming all 3 in 2014.....we can discuss and start on those once meetings, legal issues, etc. are done later this year. Theming all 3 in 2013...not a good idea. Theme just Gamex 2013. Orccon doesn't need it and Gateway is our last con at sheraton and the themes is:
Na Na Na Na
Na Na Na Na
Hey Hey Hey
Goodbye

I've been wanting to theme cons in said manner for two years....I think we're a minority.

Good idea....pending the cost and a themed con to make the most of him as a guest.
He lives in rhode island,. He is vp of Rather Dashing Games- his wife is CFO. A rhode island based game company and he is the artist for all their games. They do lots of events in new england states.
He, like any tv personality, will draw some media atttention.

His show, atlantic paranormal involvement, and his steampunk ties are pluses.
He is on atlantic coast, their 3 games are all 15-30 minute card games (Red hot silly peppers, four taverns, and X-marks the spot) and are filler games they push for people to play at faires etc, and he won't appeal to the majority of people who attend a game con for gaming and gaming guests. ...are the minuses. Mostly it is cost vs return. With los angeles area celebs it is all gravy since we aren't flying any of them in and most will want to just drive up and do a saturday or sunday then go home.

If we had a steampunk or paranormal themed con for may or sept of 2013 and had other local writers, artists, vendors, etc. that were also steampunk or paranormal themed it would work great. Plus he could do the t-shirt.
I would keep this guest "bookmarked" until we get costs, and work out a convention to bring him to so wed make the most of what he brings to the table.

So, Grant Wilson, originally of Ghost Hunters fame, is an artist, musician, and game designer. He's currently demo'ing his game from Rather Dashing Games (which you can find here). Perhaps we can add him to our list of "celebrity" guests?
