[Deptheads] Potential Guest

The foundation of our conventions is drawing gamers together, as they show up to take advantage of the gaming opportunities that come with a large group.

We need to beware of anything that hints at overspecialization.

We need to make sure that every convention avoids the appearance of being "niche." Almost any theme will not be interesting to probably two-thirds of our attendees. If any potential theme gives the impression of being the primary focus of a convention, we risk weakening the interest of those not interested in the theme.

I remind everyone of the damage that theming did not so long ago, making certain cons look like they were only for one type of gaming...

Variety and a wide range of events have helped our conventions grow. We need to make sure that we do not weaken the interest of the people that have newly discovered our cons, or that have come back after years away.

I disagree. I have people ask me what the theme of specific conventions are over what our "brand" is. It makes it easier to collect events together, organize the charity event, potentially reintroduce the costume contest, and get the special guests. If we continue with the hodge-podge that we are, it makes it much more difficult to organize in a unified fashion. This suggestion was made to the departments heads for the approval of the powers that be to allow us to go with that idea. We can then work it out in Marketing for 2014. As the powers that be have already stated branding is low on their priority list, this is something we *can* do to generate some cohesion.

Sorry to sound like a party pooper but I'm more concerned with figuring out our current branding then coming up with wacky themes.

Perhaps because we don't have a clearly defined brand/look there is this desire to fill the void with cool ideas.

Let's start with a more clearly defined look and consistent themeing that is inclusive before we start branching out and taking on more.
