[Deptheads] Banners and Names and Conventions Oh my!

I would like to way in here for a minute if I may. We tried this once a few years ago, before the convention was sold, it didn't work. The mistake we made then was trying to make each con department specific.

I agree that they should be themed in some way, Guest of Honor is an excellent way to accomplish this, with special events to tie them together.

John makes a great point and I agree 100%.  Either Strategicon or nothing on the banners.  The purpose of the banners is to help people who are already at the convention find what they are looking for and the name of the convention on the banners does not serve that purpose.

The names of the conventions should be kept and the Strategicon name included in some manner. "Strategicon's Orccon" or "Strategicon presents Orccon" both work in my opinion.

Distinguishing the three conventions is the tricky nut to crack.  I understand the desire to make the three conventions different, but the differences have to be subtle.  There are easy ways to do this that we already use, like the artwork themes and the choice of guests.  If the desire is to distinguish them more, it is first necessary to determine what is the personality or theme of each convention.  Once a theme is chosen, we should work together long before the convention on ideas and events that would fit that theme yet still be within the "normal" activity of the convention.

Also, the themes should not be department specific.  I once heard that Gateway is supposed to be for getting "new" gamers to the convention.  If this were chosen as the "theme" of Gateway, then every department should have events catering to those who have just discovered gaming.  (Big Ticket to Ride tournaments, introduction to minis classes, beginner level Pathfinder campaigns, etc.)
