The Valentine's events are not to get significant others to attend strategicon--if they are not already attending they most likely want a romantic eventing for 2 and the focus and attention on the relationship not gamers, fandom, gaming, or geek culture.
Nomatter what lipstick or sugar we put on an event it is still the significant other coming to a game con and sharing your attention with the con and other gamers and friends. The goal is not to get non-gaming spouses to attend that night.
The event suggestions are so we have a handful of games that play on the holiday. Same if we had our con during mother's day, st. Patrick's day, or Halloween. I have always run valentine's themed events when it falls during our con. The theme is the day not to have romantic events. The kids loved playing pirates pocketmodel and getting candy hearts as treasure as they rescued the captured maiden and got her to the ball by midnight to kiss the prince and break the spell or her ship would turn back into a pumpkin and she would not be with the prince who fell for her. She bit a poisoned apple and was captured so the prince would choose someone else to marry. Yes I combined several tales. Light hearted, funny and themed.
The valentine's day ball is an event. It is for couples already at the con. The theme is up to us (geek prom with costumes, or dress up affair, or something with casual wear). Those wanting to attend and help with this need to speak up- it is your ball.
Cake, punch, a few balloons and decorations, dj and music, and a photo booth. Same as any other event at our con. Attend it if interested. Those couples that want something to do "special" while at our con will have this available.
The ice cream social is an event. 8 pm til 10 pm. It is for everyone. It runs directly after the meet and greet so the guests can enjoy it and then go to the ball later if they so choose. The con will look and be the same---we just are adding some cool extra event choices for attendees on valentine's day. No one has to do anything extra for valentine's day. For those who want to have fun with it--go for it.
Hotel restaurants already are packed on valentine's day and the lines will be long to get in. It is one of their busiest times of the year. Hotel guests and every other couple in the area will pile in. Our attendees who want to have a romantic dinner at the restaurant will....but some have asked for a con event on valentine's day that is fandom themed by gamers/fandom for gamers/fandom. So we will have one for them. Personally I will probably have my 13 yr old granddaughter with me while her folks cruise and we will be serving ice cream at the social and talking to the guests. So there will be our normal schedule of events plus a few cool added events to choose from since it will be valentine's day.
