[Deptheads] Gamex 2014 - Event Submission

If you are concerned about space, we can limit it to a given number of
participants. I would think this would be a good event to have in
boardgames. Alternatively we could put it downstairs.

Is there any way that there can be a "community" (IE,
convention-controlled/owned) iPad at the event so that people who don't
happen to own an iPad can still attempt to play in the tournament?

The reason for my initial reaction was two-fold. First, this is going to
take up table space and space in my schedule for an event that Dean
correctly described as a group of people sitting around ignoring each other.
It seems to go counter to almost everything a boardgame event should be.

My bigger concern is the requirement to bring an iPad and own the game.
This event is extremely exclusive compared to other events in my department.
Usually, if you don't own the game, you can play. This will be the first
time (maybe ever) in boardgames where the only way to play in the event is
to already own the game.

Honestly, I think this is a cool idea, but I would rather it was made more
of a Special Event and done somewhere other than boardgames. I agree that
we want to take care of the designers who come to our convention so I would
rather make a bigger deal out of this than just putting it on the boardgame
schedule.

It's an odd crossroad for sure but Mines is a board game and it can be
played solo or multiplayer. I expect this is just good promotion for both
and a kind of neat idea since I see a heck of a lot of iPads at
Strategicons. I concur on the idea - keep it in board games.

While it's true that the event is a solo iPad game, done competitively,
Ta-Te Wu is a board game designer, and largely unheard of by the video
gaming crowd (except for people like myself who are crossover gamers). You
want this event in Board Gaming, if only for the exposure for him to his
board-gaming base. Banishing him to the hinterlands of the Video Gaming Room
could be viewed as an insult. I doubt very much that you want to do that to
your board game designers. ;)

Also, the game is a solitaire game. Board games usually involve interaction
between players - this will be several people sitting around a table,
staring into their iPads, ignoring each other. It definitely feels more
like a video game event.

I can see his confusion, though - it's not technically a board game.
Although the prize is a board game, it does not seem like that's what
they're playing, since it requires that they bring the iPad game. I'm
tempted to class it as a video game.

What is the issue? Ta-Te is a good friend of mine and I can resolve any
issues with it.

I am not sure what to do with this event submitted by Ta-Te Wu...

Mines is a solitaire tile placement iPad (iOS) game based on Mines of the
Sacred Dragon. Players must bring their own iPad with Mines installed to
participate the tournament. The player who played and receives highest point
during the tournament hour will win a copy of Mines of the Sacred Dragon
board game.
