[Deptheads] Event Types

Neither the showcase nor Ghost Court is tabletop, so once that delineation is made, things become clear. The boffer belongs in LARP, but I could see war gamers enjoying it. Ghost Court is a LARPy Party Game… or a party LARP. It deserves a crosslisting.

When I said collectibles, I meant miniatures (oops). I'm emailing from campus on my phone in between student inquiries.

Thank you Tara!

This is what I’m looking for.

Just one clarification, currently “Roleplaying” on our site refers to “Tabletop Roleplaying” which I’m thinking your previous suggestion has more merit by the minute.

With that in mind, is Boffer Showcase a LARP, Tabletop Roleplaying and War, or just LARP and war? Same question for Ghost Court.

As for Battlestations, I decided to check it out a little on boardgamegeek. I see the board game. I can see the “Tabletop RPG”. I can even stretch it to Miniatures (which is where it usually runs), but I curious, how is it “Collectible”? I guess with 9 expansions some could see it as collectible, but that would make Carcassone collectible, and we’re not going there. :)

Alright, some examples.

Battlestations could go into Board games, tabletop rpg, and collectibles.

The boffer showcase which my department runs could be a LARP,  “Roleplaying,” and a war game.

Ghost Court could be a LARP, “Roleplaying,” and a Party Game.

I think you can see how this can easily get hairy. The best way to classify games is based on what kinds of players would want to play it and what kinds of resources a department can provide for it. The rest is just pointless classification and tortured data collecting on our part, and I don’t see how that serves the players.

Right now I really need to hear from everyone on any game that would fit in three or more distinct types. If I don’t hear by Noon on Thursday, I’m going to have to run with two types only.

We can certainly consider listing “Live Action RPG” and “Tabletop RPG”. That would be an easy fix at any future point.

My first and main thought is that LARP and role playing are rather synonymous. You might want to instead go with the distinction of LARP vs. Tabletop RPG, because that is the main difference between mine and Jim’s departments.

Hi,

For the purpose of event generation, Departments will be becoming Event Types.

I’m trying to figure out how to make things work right for all events. These are the two issues involving Event Types that I’m aware of.

1. Events running in areas not consistent with their real event type. i.e. Most Steve Jackson Games.

2. Events appropriate in multiple event types and often listing in multiple departments.

The first one I can adapt to easily provided I know what lengths I have to go for the second one.

Here is where I need your help.
What is the likelihood of an event being appropriate for more than two event types? I need everyone to think hard. Can you think of any game that would really fit in more than two event types?

For this exercise, please look at War Games and Party Games as splinter groups of Board & Card Games, and Adventurers’ League and Pathfinder Society as splinters of Roleplaying, which means they don’t need to be listed in the group they split from.

I need a list of such games. If it’s long enough, I have to think hard how to handle the process.

Events Types will be

Board & Card Games
Collectible Cards & Minis
LARP
Miniatures
Party Games
Roleplaying
Adventurers’ League
Pathfinder Society
Video Games
War Games
General

Event Classifications for users will be

Event
101
Demo
Tournament
Playtest
Seminar

Admins instead of Tournament will see

Small Tournament
Medium Tournament (selected)
Big Tournament
Mega Tournament

Sponsored will be a checkbox seen by all.
Special will be a checkbox seen by Admins only.

Thanks for helping me help everyone make more sense of events.

Tanya
