First off I mentioned the gender identity as an example. More to the point a better understanding of who your players are gives you better tools to provide a better story. Especially since the large majority of rpg players know each other and play in each others games frequently. To be perfect honest I don't care either way, but it is a GM request that has been issued over several departments and unless we can find a very good reason to deny this level of transparency we should consider it.

Gender identity of each player would have to accompany their registration if you are adjusting your game based on the gender identity of the player (for LARPS). For MMORPGs and tabletop RPGs your gender identity does not automatically determine the gender of the character you will play. Last con for example I played an rpg with renee and my character was female (pizzazz type from jem and holograms) and her character was male (mr. T type). We were brother and sister. Made up on site when we sat down. why? Because I was a pre-reg but she was not.. She signed up on site. When asked to create con rpg at sdcc or gencon we created male and female versions of each pre-made character. Remember--- Half of the players sig-up on-site. Only half can prereg. Day badges and full con badges purchased at con are other half. GMs can include their email when listing the event and ask players to contact them if they wish to add personalization for pre-regs (other things factor in for personalization or group dynamics besides gender). Games that use your ongoing characters and database them (like pathfinder and adv. league) run their scenario and gms adjust on site if they need to (scenario for 6 and only 4 players show, all players similar class or type, etc)....plus pre-regs not showing up at all. I like how their ongoing systems work.

One shots are a different beat however. But with at least half your players signing up on site is it needed? Sure it benefits knowing (but knowing is half the battle since at least half the players will be unknown until on-site sign up begins.

As it is...any Gm wanting to know the pre-reg for their events can ask their supervisor (since most will not it is an exception not a rule).Especially larps since actual body count is vital for them since players are physically moving about and interacting (more bodies, handful of events).

If pre-registed for the con you used to be able to see the names of those pre-reg for an event...that went away many years ago. Someone else can mention the pros and cons of that system and if going back to it would be a boon or bane.

V

On Friday, February 5, 2016 12:35 PM, Strategicon Department Heads <deptheads@strategicon.net> wrote:

Jim,

Is it the who or the how many that is so important?
