  John, if you are going balls to the wall and throwing down cash, then talk with some artistic / builder people - I am sure you know many in the minis community - and see how the highly visually appealing "barrier walls" can be done both in glorious eyecatching design and with minimized cost. 
   
  When I walk into the minis room, I go directly toward the eye candy.  Even if I do not play for a minute, somehow my con experience just became cooler because of the massive Star Wars figure Tatooine layout, or the two table French town undersiege by a hundred tanks or Minas Tirith falling to the orcish hordes. 
   
  A bunch of guys playing with model ships on the carpet = meh
   
  A bunch of guys playing with model ships on a faux ocean surrounded by highly visual barriers depicting naval battles across the eras that draws me from across the room = much much cooler
