[Deptheads] RPGs/LARPS dept status

Just a quick status on RPGs/Larps.

All scheduled LARPS went off just fine and as scheduled, including Camarilla
events. We¹re all good there.

RPG attendance was lower than last year¹s Gamex though not dramatically.

Many GMs told me that the noise issue wasn¹t terrible but it wasn¹t
favorable to quieter GMs and players. I was glad to hear that the noise
issue wasn¹t overwhelming.

What I was surprised at was the universal complaint over lack of air
circulation in the RPG conference rooms and strong stench that permeated
those rooms later in the day over the weekend. I heard from people who said
that these conditions were awful and that they literally couldn¹t hold their
games where they were assigned; they found other space either in the bar,
the cabanas if they were available or their own hotel rooms. A
heating/cooling technician who attended the con told me that he thinks the
air conditioning to Laguna/Malibu/Newport was kept very low or turned off
altogether as indicated by temperature and humidity levels in there. Not
sure if this is another hotel issue or not; I do remember when we had staff
meetings in those rooms before and the air was frigid. I think those spaces
were capable of being ventilated & cooled more but they purposely were not.

There were some complaints forwarded to me that there wasn¹t Open Gaming
space set-aside for RPGs. While we could have better used the space
provided by Penthouse and the Cabanas when not used by Larps, at peak times
‹ afternoon and evening ‹ we simply didn¹t have the room necessary to set
aside Open Gaming for RPGs. I¹m not sure how to resolve this and maybe it
can¹t be. I would say that if we do end up setting aside Open Gaming on the
2nd floor for board-games, maybe we can route them up there. I¹m NOT
trying to take away space from Patrick¹s dept, I just don¹t know where to
route folks if they¹re looking for designated Open Gaming space for their
rpgs. We simply don¹t have the room amongst the first floor conference
rooms that we have now.

As many GMs that have told me they won¹t be back, other GMs told me that
they had fun and would be back regardless. (Basically, a few on either
side.)

The Dungeons & Dragons 4e events hosted by the RPGA proved popular though I
heard several complaints that the RPGA didn¹t have quality GMs. RPGA seems
to be in bureaucratic hell since they don¹t have a person clearly in charge
of So Cal. Basically, a triumvirate of supervisors deals with California
(and southwestern U.S.) and while two of them were very pleased with all the
RPGA events and where they were placed, one of them isn¹t at all happy that
the RPGA events weren¹t all grouped together in one area (we had 4e demos in
the foyer, if you recall), as well as being unhappy about lack of private
rooms for RPGA and plans to ³punish² the con by withholding certain 4e
scenarios in September. Robert Lionheart is RPGA laison and I¹ll work with
him to get this ironed out. My take is that RPGA needs to appreciate that
they scored more new members this past con then in their previous 3 years of
attendance at Strategicons (this figure comes from the two RPGA supervisors
who were happy with the con). We did a big push for them and it helped both
us and them.
