That may be a great tie-in: famous gamers. We all know gamers grow up to be pretty sucessful people. I know Wil Wheaton would be exspensive, and thus out of reach, but what about other gamers who are in the news/public eye?

Don't forget, in 1997 we got Tom Clancy to come out for free to
Origins....ZERO cost to us....because he was promoting a game he just
developed. Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling goes to New England gaming
conventions and signs autographs for free because he is a huge Miniatures
gamer. See if there is someone out there that we can share promotional's
with and let's see what happens....?

Agreed. Personally, I think this idea is DOA unless it is completely
free, doesn't take up much space and requires virtually no effort. Even
then, it will add zero to the attendees numbers (except, perhaps,
the author's families) and might amuse a very small portion of
attendees at best.
As someone who worked in the book industry for many years and hosted
hundreds of author visits (including dozens at sci-fi cons), it is rare that
you can get people to really come out for these kind of guys. Only really
big names will draw people and for those folks, we are competing with the
local sci-fi cons and stores. There are a ton of other opportunities to see
these people if you want to do so.

Folks,
The only thing I have against this is that the Sci Fi cons do a much
bigger deal about the authors that live in the area. If it brings
people out, great, but we are competing with a group that's been doing that
for 30 years. The real problem I see is that these guys usually get
paid to come out, either a per book signing fee, or a up front fee from the
con. We should find out what some of the "local" authors get paid for
this.

Going "outside the box," vampire sex authors would bring people from
outside gaming to the con to see women like Hamilton and Harrison.
I'll do some checking to see who is local we MIGHT want to hit up on for
something like this and make a list.
Maybe a quick survey at Gamex about "We are considering bringing in
some authors to Guest at Gateway...what authors do you read?" might give
some perspective in the area of who our current customers keep up
with....?

Authors could be interesting guests. Our RPGA dude Mike Rizzo
just talked with Ed Greenwood (Forgotten Realms books) and Ed is open to
being a future guest. SoCal probably has a dozen known
authors. However, I am unsure how many people will come see
authors at a gaming con. Does anyone have any point of
reference for this?
