[Deptheads] Orccon Space Layout

Kids,
Miniatures do not require that all their events and games be on the risers.
In fact we actually requested (placed orders for) tables rather than risers
for several conventions, because some of my miniature gamers were
complaining about their backs hurting from leaning lower to get to their
games. Guess what, the hotel ran out of tables before they got to our
department and guess what?? We got risers, because that was all that was
left!!
We have said it several times, that we are happy to have miniatures as the
overflow for open gaming (especially since the fact is that after hours it
has become that already become that for many board gamers and the werewolf
game). We just cannot be that during prime time Saturday and Sunday.
So guess, what if we get tables for most of miniatures, then joint usage
with board games becomes less problematic (if they are the square/rectangle
tables).
Miniatures is able to be flexible and shrink and grow as the need arrises.
But lets be honest here also, until we move out of the most terrible of
hotels: The Radisson, we will probably not get our miniature gamers to
return. They dont want to fight to have to get their miniatures to the
hotel, they have constantly complained about the awful elevators to bring
their miniatures up to upper floors, they do not wish to be relegated to the
dungeon of the first floor, away from the public and the rest of the gamers,
and they do not wish to carry their miniatures and terrain several blocks or
leave them questionably guarded with the Valet. We will not get a
resurgence of miniature gamers until we move.
Large number of miniature gamers? yes we will have them this con due to two
large tournaments that are occurring: Broadside bash and Flames of War. We
need smaller events to keep them at the con rather than them going home at
night. But our GMs for those smaller games are kept above by the above
paragraph issues.

I realize I don't draw a huge crowd but I do have some suggestions for this
discussion.
There are board gamers who behind the scenes with Patrick fought to get open
gaming in the first place. They are the ones who feel like door mats at the
con and are going to be very upset, granted they are not a very big group
but I thought I would speak for them, being the other not big group.
I have to be honest, this of course is coming from an outsiders perspective,
but mini's don't fill up. Every time I have heard that people say there are
going to be a lot of mini's players there are not. I know the broadside
bash fills, but it has it's own room right? It seems to me that expanded
mini's is important but I don't think you have to steam roll every thing to
do it.
You want to get mini's in to open gaming, I think that is a good idea but
put two or three risers in the open gaming area and see what you get.
I believe John P pointed out that growing open gaming is going to take time,
and it has don't take it away now that it is starting to grow. Last con we
had quite a few people use open gaming, I set up the War Game Boot Camp
right in front of it and watched it all con.
I think what is happening is everyone has a perspective they think is right
(including me). I think it would be better to discuss with individual
departments what your ideas are before just announcing to the entire group
sweeping changes you want to do. Everyone is on edge and get's territorial
when you do things like that.
I can only speak for board games since that is where my experience lies but
I know it is hard enough trying to coordinate the amount and quality of the
games they schedule. I think that also asking them to schedule down exactly
how many tables and when is asking too much.
Just my opinion...

I don't agree with this premise. OG should have a defined area to keep open
gaming from setting up in other areas. You can't say setup your game in this
area, unless we need it for something else. I think reducing OG and making
more room for Minis is fine. Minis gets some open mini gaming as is.
Are we certain that the foyer is a good location for minis?
What do Robyn and Jose think they will need and where do they want to be?
What about John's events that take up large amounts of space?
OG can be adjusted very easily, lets figure out Minis needs before find a
solution for it. I am not arguing against getting Minis more room, I just
don't think this is a good way to do it.
