Karl,
I appreciate your comments. If mini's doesn't fill up then there won't
be an issue. But at Gateway we had to move two or three games into the
ballroom. At the time we did this open gaming was empty. With Eric
B.'s help we were able to move some of of the reserved board game event
tables to other open tables in the ball room. Everyone will agree that
Orccon is generally better attended than Gateway. Miniatures already
has a higher turnout than they did at Gateway. Add to that equation
that HMGS has decided to return and support the con. If mini's doesn't
fill up then we won't have an issue. It is however more prudent to plan
for them filling up and be ready for it than to make changes at the last
minute.
Switching boardgames to the back ballroom and open gaming up front will
allow things to be adjusted. Mini's also don't always have to have
risers. We are going to try to make room for everyone.
As for scheduling tables, board games already does this. They do a
pretty good job at it. What I am asking them to do it be a bit more
conservative in the number of empty tables they allow.
Having mini's in the ballroom has been discussed with the departments
involved and the idea was rejected without a viable solution. One of
the points that Eric B. brought up to me is that not everyone knows what
is going on in the various departments. He is correct, which is another
reason this was put to the entire list. You will also note in my
original post that I asked for constructive comments and suggestions.
What has changed since I started this thread is HMGS has gotten in touch
with us and wants to come back to the con. The reason this is being
discussed now is we as a whole tend to put things off until the last
minute. I don't want to be having this discussion the last week of January.
I understand how the 'open gamers' might feel like doormats of the con
(though you might get an argument from the LARPs folks for that
honorific). My personal opinion is open gaming should be open to all,
claimed by none and used as an overflow for events if we need it. I
know not everyone shares that opinion, so I think for Gamex we will have
to look at the feasibility setting aside some tables for open board
gaming, make that part of the space allocation for board games. That
will make them more or less 'official'. I personally don't agree with
that but I don't want to see any consistently attending group be
disenfranchised either.
Thanks again for your comments.
