[Deptheads] SoCal Smackdown (Was: Get games up ASAP!)

I've done a little more research on SoCal Smackdown, given the information
that came up in this thread and on their websites. Given all of that, I have
to agree that the date is a calculated insult and attempt to "steal" that
weekend from Strategicon, not just an unfortunate coincidence (as I'd
assumed before). Not the brightest of moves - it would have been
strategically better to establish the convention on another weekend, run it
for several conventions, get a loyal base, and THEN attempt to take over the
highly-coveted Labor Day weekend, once they have the clout to force people
to choose. As it stands now, the only people they'll get are disgruntled
ex-Strategicon goers and people for whom medium-range travel is a burden. A
relatively small group, that...
I disagree with the idea that we should blacklist MiBs who host events at
SCSD. I do think that we should make them choose, but it's a bad idea to
punish them for making a mistake in choosing. If they choose to go to SCSD,
and thereafter come back to Strategicon, let it be. Just don't let them play
both sides of the field. Steve Jackson Games is not a publisher that we want
to piss off, and while the MiBs are volunteers who have no major tie to SJG,
blacklisting the MiBs could cause some backlash from the parent company. To
that end, it might be worthwhile to approach SJG directly, and discuss SoCal
exclusivity with them.
I agree that the SCSD website looks slick and professional. And they're
working on it as an ongoing project, since many of the buttons that didn't
work last time I checked now work fully. We do need to get a professional
(or at least skilled) web designer to have a go at our site, and punch it up
a bit.
With regard to miniatures events, I was wondering whether it might not be a
good idea to run "Leagues" for games like Blood Bowl, Necromunda, and so on
between conventions, and host Playoffs and Finals at conventions. It would
be an interesting way to keep interest high.
I'll try to get the bulk of the Computer Room events up tonight, but it may
not happen before the weekend. Barring catastrophe or major space-out on my
part, it'll get done.

"Would you like another drink, sir?" asked the bartender.
"I think not," replied Descartes, and promptly vanished.
