I agree 100% with Bill.
They are the challenger trying to give reason for people to attend their
convention. We need to just promote ourselves like we do in february.
Total event numbers are a bigger deal to con organizers than gamers. Sally
doesn't care you have 500 events if you have 0 of the events she wants to play
or participate in. Looking at what is offered morso than how much overall.
And california cons are notorious for fudging events. The open gaming room (10
am to 1 am) at a con in sacramaneto lists every hour of the open game room as an
event each. That is 15 events per day and 45 total for the 3-day weekend. 1001
ways to inflate numbers. Guests, seminars, special events, major tourneys, etc.
are the eye grabbers for early promos not total events. Especially when gamers
can go to the sites for these cons and add up the events.
I also would not say anything about volunteers, owners, etc. Debating money,
ownership, volunteer compensation (like hotel room), etc. serves no positive
purpose and will have the gaming community scratching it's head...as well as
game companies, industry people, other cons, and potential guests.
Let's take the high road.
Promote what we have- d20 girls, boardgames library, demoes of newest and
hottest games, video game room, wargames bootcamp, rock band tourneys, big
tourneys we have, guests, unique rpg events, movies and anime,
costume contest, vip dinner, game designers and companies attending showing
their products, monday game auction, play with creator and playtest games,
larps, saturday night dance, etc.
Add that with our regular schedule of events all over and it speaks for itself
as a great overall convention experience.

GATEWAY DOES:
I would remove the line (unlike other conventions) since I thought the idea was
to provide a better con making people want to come, not by bad mouthing the
competition and lowering yourselves to their level. I would toot your own horn
but refrain form appearing to engage in a battle of accusations, take the "High
Road"

PS Robyn, I never received a reply if there was anything we could help with?
Stands? We will have a pretty good HMGS/PSW presence once again at "Gateway"
