Regardless of the specifics of this case, I think one thing that is not
clear to our GMs is whether they private attendees or are representing the
con. I think as soon as they are "volunteers" getting comped badges, it's
clear that they are representing the con and their actions and attire
reflect on us. Of course, an individual player doesn't have a way of
distinguishing between a "volunteer" GM and one who isn't running enough
events to get a badge.
Beyond that private attendees still contribute to the environment of the
convention and we have an obligation to make the environment welcoming to
attendees (especially if we want to grow attendance).
It might help set future expectations if we explicitly tell our GMs and
other volunteers our goals and expectations. This doesn't need to be
draconian, but something along the lines of "We want to grow our hobby and
make the con a welcoming place for all gamers from different walks of
life. Please support this and don't do things to make it unwelcoming to
anyone. As a GM you represent the con -- please represent us well."
