I disagree. But, quite obviously, I am the minority in a great many ways.
I *do* agree, however, with Nyquist. Doing something *now* will only
exacerbate the issue. It's not even a problem, really....it's an
issue...that very few of us even have evidence of. Shane, Dean, and
Burgess are likely the only ones who truly know who the person even
is...and if it's *THAT BIG* of a deal.....just don't allow him to GM for a
con or two. "Dude, we got a couple of complaints about you, and we're
looking into the situation...so, until we resolve the issue, we can't allow
you to GM for Orccon." I don't think we need to make a huge production out
of it and it kinda also addresses the "Mean and Creepy" complaint, as well
(which, I agree, is the bigger issue). I think we need to take more action
to make people feel *safe* at the convention rather than to ensure their
feelings aren't hurt.
...and Mike Fryer will probably remember the tirade I had about an RPG GM
at Orccon this year who was *actually* offensive. If I can go to the
department head and say, "This guy's an ass" the day of the event, anyone
can. I am NOT a confrontational person (unless you hit my hot
button...which, clearly, this issue does). I can seriously turn this into
a "oh, it's just a girl's delicate sensibilities" issue vs. a "this is one
of the bros getting up in arms" issue. THEN we will have some *serious*
problems. Really look at *why* a t-shirt is the issue and not the *creepy*
factor. As creepy as I call Paiva, if someone's bothering me, he's the
first one I go to because he will *defend* and he will take care of the
problem....mafia style. I've gone to him exactly 0 times because, as I
stated... I just *ignore* the people doing creepy things.... Believe me,
I've felt *very* unsafe at our convention. When those moments happen, I
grab whatever male friend I'm with and say, "This dude's creeping me
out...." I don't "report" it because there's nothing anyone can do,
really. At least, that's what I've been told.
So. I suppose my new question is....
If a female staff member has lodged a serious complaint before and has been
brushed off, what message are you sending when you want to make rules
regarding t-shirts, but are unmoved to make rules regarding safety?
Yeah, I think I've reached the point of being offended by this discussion.
Maybe not offended....maybe more .... pissed off. I'll remove myself.
