[Deptheads] Banners and Names and Conventions Oh my!

The problem is that anytime you spotlight a department people lose interest in the others and so people don't come out. So unless a department has 50 percent of the attendees to start with, we lose more than we gain almost guaranteed. In any event it alienates more people than it pleases.

The key is making each department as strong as possible. It's a lot of work, but if people feel they're seeing commitment to what they like, regardless of what we're doing elsewhere, they are more likely to feel good about what we are doing and more likely to come out.

There are easy ways to do this that we already use, like the artwork themes and the choice of guests. If the desire is to distinguish them more, it is first necessary to determine what is the personality or theme of each convention. Once a theme is chosen, we should work together long before the convention on ideas and events that would fit that theme yet still be within the "normal" activity of the convention.

If this were chosen as the "theme" of Gateway, then every department should have events catering to those who have just discovered gaming. (Big Ticket to Ride tournaments, introduction to minis classes, beginner level Pathfinder campaigns, etc.)
