Shane and Dean drive the Boardgames train and someone told them to make space for a portable gaming device game---so they questioned why it was in boardgames when it is not a boardgame. It is people sitting around playing solitaire on their handheld electronic device at the same table. You don't need a table, just a bunch of chairs for them to sit in. It is not an eye candy event nor does it need foot traffic since attendees cannot see it and just jump in unless they have an ipad on them and got there before the event started. It is a timed event so you have to be there when it begins.
The prize is irrelevant to where the event is run. The Alamo DVD movie can be given away as a prize for a western miniatures skirmish game--does not mean the event should have been held in seminar room where movies are shown.
Ta-Te is a great guy...so the question is are people wanting Shane trumped because it is Ta-Te or because of the event? Is it an event decision or a person decision? Anything can be justified to be put in an area. We have several game designers that attend our con and some of them have their boardgames, rpg or ccg games available on portable electronic devices. Same game available electronically to play instead of the live-version where you sit down with others to play with cards, dice, game board, tokens, etc.
Days of wonder has ticket to ride and small world available as board games, online games, and pocket games (handheld devices) for example. Would we run those events in boardgames on iOS?
Shane is the boardgames supervisor and it is his call. If an event doesn't seem to belong a supervisor should question it even if it is one of us here submitting it--simply ask why it has to be in that area and work out placing it somewhere that is agreeable and workable. Shane and the Ta-Te.
If after they talk the event is not in boardgames, Ta-Te is unhappy, and several supervisors feel Shane should be trumped on his decision (and give reasons for it being in boardgames and not anywhere else) then the board will consider asking him to put it in boardgames. This was always his call since if Shane did not post about it here and contacted Ta-Te and resolved it there would be no feedback anyways unless Ta-Te compolained to Eric B. or someone else about it. If shane has any questions before or after talking to Ta-Te should be directed to Eric B.
Frankly I think it should be a special event and give it a room for the 1 hour of time it runs. It doesn't need tables so it fits most anywhere. It just needs chairs. It is a destination event, it requires having the device AND the game installed so it is truly a special event you come prepared to play. It will be a success.
