For Boardgames it simply indicates the difference in payouts:

Mega            $50, $40, $30, $20Big                $20, $15, $10, $5
Medium        $15, $10, $5
Small            $5, $3, $1

Eric, I should probably use this opportunity to mention that these need to be updated in the con book.

OK, I searched and couldn't find what the difference is between small, medium and large tournaments. Is there somewhere that explains this? Thanks,Karla

This seems like a great way to give people better information. I am also a fan of anything that promotes cross-department cooperation and synergise event scheduling.

Thank you Mike and Karla. :)
It paid off for me to explain my plans to some folks at the con.
The plan is for a “Primary Event Type” with optional “Secondary Event Type” and for admins only “Host”, since our departments mostly equate to event types.
Events will be searchable by Primary and Secondary Type.
Host will default to the Primary Event Type. Host will determine which admins see and control the event, since it’s their time and space. Host will not be searchable on the Event Schedule.
When Host is General, the real host will be determined by the location. This may change at some point, but with all the changes already happening I need some things to stay consistent.
Just to show how this will change some events.Artemis will likely be searchable under Video Games and RPGs or LARPs, but will be hosted by General still.
--------------Note on Location: Location can be one of two options, the exact location of the event, or the location of the paperwork until the event starts. I personally think the HQ location is the best place to send everyone and have them directed from there. You could post a room assignment list at the HQ. If you really want to list the location of the event, but don’t know it yet, please list the paperwork/HQ location until you do. The idea is that people always have a reasonable physical location to look for answers.--------------

P.S. I’m usually more than happy to discuss web site requests or issues at the con, though as I mentioned to Shane, if you don’t email me a reminder of what we discussed, I may not remember it by the time I get home. I’m usually in the Family Area and if I’m at the HQ and not helping someone, I’m usually all ears. :)

She explained this to me as well and makes sense. Since most SJG games are up in their area in Collectables, it would be good for people to find under a card game or board game search...same for AEG, Renegade, and IGA games run by teams there. Since the CMON team sticks together in minis, sometimes people don't realize there are some games that are technically board games. Especially games like Blood Rage and Rising Sun that are board games with minis...that take up room. It made perfect sense when Tanya explained it to me.Karla

Hey folks,

I think something that would greatly help this conversation is to share something Tanya told me about possible changes to the way we sort and search. Short version, you will be able to select a secondary type of game so that if the event has any type of crossover, it would be listed under a search for that type also without being a second complete entry. So in that context, her question about how wide that should be has a different focus. As far as minis events, the majority of any crossover would be boardgames and occasionally RPGs. I haven't been able to think of any that would really qualify for a third without getting overly abstract about it. I think she was looking for an answer about if anyone can make the legitimate case for needing a tertiary tyoe for search criteria.
I reserve the right to be completely incorrect about this, but that is how i read to me.
Thanks,
Mike

Battlestations definitely is not a collectible game, it is a miniatures / boardgame / RPG hybrid, but it primarily plays like a board game/minis game (the latter more based on the table space it takes)

Thank you Tara!
This is what I’m looking for.
Just one clarification, currently “Roleplaying” on our site refers to “Tabletop Roleplaying” which I’m thinking your previous suggestion has more merit by the minute.
With that in mind, is Boffer Showcase a LARP, Tabletop Roleplaying and War, or just LARP and war? Same question for Ghost Court.
As for Battlestations, I decided to check it out a little on boardgamegeek. I see the board game. I can see the “Tabletop RPG”. I can even stretch it to Miniatures (which is where it usually runs), but I curious, how is it “Collectible”? I guess with 9 expansions some could see it as collectible, but that would make Carcassone collectible, and we’re not going there. :)

Alright, some examples. Battlestations could go into Board games, tabletop rpg, and collectibles. The boffer showcase which my department runs could be a LARP,  “Roleplaying,” and a war game. Ghost Court could be a LARP, “Roleplaying,” and a Party Game.  I think you can see how this can easily get hairy. The best way to classify games is based on what kinds of players would want to play it and what kinds of resources a department can provide for it. The rest is just pointless classification and tortured data collecting on our part, and I don’t see how that serves the players. Tara Sent from my Windows 10 device From: Strategicon Department Heads

Subject: Re: [Deptheads] Event Types Right now I really need to hear from everyone on any game that would fit in three or more distinct types. If I don’t hear by Noon on Thursday, I’m going to have to run with two types only. We can certainly consider listing “Live Action RPG” and “Tabletop RPG”. That would be an easy fix at any future point. Tanya

You might want to instead go with the distinction of LARP vs. Tabletop RPG, because that is the main difference between mine and Jim’s departments. Tara Sent from my Windows 10 device From: Strategicon Department Heads

Subject: [Deptheads] Event Types Hi, For the purpose of event generation, Departments will be becoming Event Types. I’m trying to figure out how to make things work right for all events. These are the two issues involving Event Types that I’m aware of. 1. Events running in areas not consistent with their real event type. i.e. Most Steve Jackson Games. 2. Events appropriate in multiple event types and often listing in multiple departments. The first one I can adapt to easily provided I know what lengths I have to go for the second one. Here is where I need your help. What is the likelihood of an event being appropriate for more than two event types? I need everyone to think hard. Can you think of any game that would really fit in more than two event types? For this exercise, please look at War Games and Party Games as splinter groups of Board & Card Games, and Adventurers’ League and Pathfinder Society as splinters of Roleplaying, which means they don’t need to be listed in the group they split from. I need a list of such games. If it’s long enough, I have to think hard how to handle the process. Events Types will be Board & Card GamesCollectible Cards & MinisLARPMiniaturesParty GamesRoleplayingAdventurers’ LeaguePathfinder SocietyVideo GamesWar GamesGeneral Event Classifications for users will be Event101DemoTournamentPlaytestSeminar Admins instead of Tournament will see Small TournamentMedium Tournament (selected)Big TournamentMega Tournament Sponsored will be a checkbox seen by all.Special will be a checkbox seen by Admins only. Thanks for helping me help everyone make more sense of events. Tanya  _______________________________________________
