LARP Plans/Thoughts for Virtual Gamex
Outreach
-
LARPs at Strategicon FB group and other Stratcon groups
-
Have Erin, Sam, and Cozy folks (Joe, Ross, Ev) reach out to area
LARPers; ask Christian to inform the Valkyrie list
-
Email the normal call for games list to recruit players, but not for GMs
-
Personal GM outreach (reach out to trusted list for particular games,
and see if Cozy would like to bring their playtested games from their con
over to Stratcon a week later.
-
See if Ross wants to get the LARPs at Strategicon Twitter handle revved
up for this con.
-
Post about playing through LARP filters on general Facebook (ask those
who have a list of every LARPer they know on Facebook to post through that
filter)
Issues
-
We need the deadline for game submissions pushed back, since room
assignments are not necessary and there is no printed con book, and
everything is sixes and sevens right now.
-
We need assurances from con IT of a portal for GMs to reach out to
players, so GMs can reach out to players ahead of time and get game
materials to them. That will assure LARPs run well, on time, and at high
quality.
Staff Requirements
-
Someone on overwatch during games, to deal with CoC issues and coordinate
-
Tech support *shudder*
-
Need schedule, master game list (with GM contact and joining info)
-
Need to make sure we have people available, either on overwatch or in
each game, to unfuck problems
-
Shoot for 10 events or so; more likely to get six. Try not to stack.
-
Need to review GM plans and tech checks; get statement from all GMs
-
Need to ensure we know how to silence/boot unwelcome interlopers or
players who don’t listen to safety requests (e.g. griefers, because people
suck on the internet)
Event Requirements (beyond normal submission details)
-
Per game audio/video call (Recommend hangouts for free video with
unlimited length)
-
Per game contact setup (Longstanding GM ask)
-
Per game explanation and player expectations document (public)
-
Per game needs/structure explanation (private GM/Tara/Rob)
-
Per game tech check (Mon-Thurs in the week leading up to con)
-
Per game safety mechanic requirement
-
Per game player tech/resource requirement
-
Baseline is a computer or phone with audio
-
Per game plan for losing players mid-game*
GM Requirements
-
Only people we trust to be safe (use safety checks, adhere to CoC, not
be creepy)
-
Only people we trust to deliver game at quality for Strategicon
regardless of tech and limitations
-
Only people we know well
-
Need to have tech and internet
-
Need to have A Freaking Plan
-
Roughly invite: Tara, Rob, Ryan, Christian, Joe, Ross, Kevin, Nicco,
Andy, Evan, Mike L., Sam Christopher, Sam Housten, Rebecca, Betty, Aaron or
Kirsten, and consider the Bay Area people, though they might be too busy
with Kubla.
-
Invite someone from LearnLarp; reach out to Maury
-
Reach out to Event Horizon (try Quinn)
Player Requirements
-
Enforce age restrictions
-
Does the website collect this?
-
Verify at the beginning of games, and/or speak to parent for 13+
games.
-
Read the Code of Conduct
-
Need a stable internet connection
-
Need to have audio that does not cause feedback
-
Communicate that players need to be available for the event’s estimated
duration or clearly communicate otherwise upfront to GM
-
Read and understand the expectations document and background material before
game starts.
Agreement for Participants: All participants must agree to do their
best to fully engage with LARPs for the duration of their game, and
participate in an interested and involved manner. While the internet is a
bastion of distractions, we ask that players disengage from competing
activities as much as practical, and be responsive and invested in the
games that they play. We also ask that all participants, players, GMs and
staff, keep in mind that everyone is trying to make this work and have fun
under unpredictable and adverse circumstances. Please be kind to one
another, and be patient with one another, and remember that none of us
would have structured our events entirely this way by choice.
*: The door is always open, and players are free to leave if they feel
unsafe or uncomfortable continuing, but starting a four hour game with a
hard commitment two hours in may be vastly more disruptive than it would in
meat-space, and should be considered a dick move. It’s kind of a pain in
the ass normally, and GMs are likely to be stretched thinner than normal
running games online.
