This is definitely a possibility, but after reading the messages following
this post let me add one thing.
When I quit going to Strategicon, the primary problem that forced out open
gamers was that people were playing on one table and "holding" another (or
sometimes 2). One of the purposes of anyone becoming the OG Czar (Director,
Coordinator, whatever) is to ensure this doesn't happen and be a focal point for
people to come and say "Where can I set up a game?"
I appreciate your comments and fondly remember when the only thing that
would get me out of the OG room was a good Third Reich tournament (2nd edition of
course). My taking the post would hinge on one condition, and it is PURELY
functional and not ego or anything like that. Will you (all) take the
position of Open Gaming Czar (anyone in this post, not just me) as seriously and
put the needs of this department on par with Dealer's Room, Collectibles,
Boardgames, etc.? For us to truly accomplish something and bring back these
people in force, we need to make a statement and show them OG is here to stay and
means something to the Convention as a whole.
If everyone wants this, I can draw up a plan for OG and present it at the
next meeting for discussion and amendments.

John - since u seem the most passionate about Open Gaming (and that was a
very inspiring post (I mean that sincerely)) - perhaps you should become Open
Gaming Czar.
As for finding space, good luck. Boardgames are the convention equivalent of
the Borg: we will all be assimilated. ;)

Also, the population of Open Gaming changes from year to year. When I first
started going to conventions in the 70s, Open Gaming was Open RPG almost
exclusively. In the 90s, Open Gaming was a huge part card games. Recently, OG
is mainly Boardgames and RPGs. There is a realistic chance that if the D&D
miniatures game takes off, a lot of OG will be collectible miniatures and
out Collectible room will be dedicated to events. I agree that compared to
everything else, this is a "mouth sore." Remember, the reason we only have 12
to 15 people looking for OG is because of how shitty they have been treated
by ALL conventions lately. they are ALWAYS "what room we have left over."
We have a chance to bring those people back by showing them that they ARE a
part of our convention. i am not saying it is THE priority or even the 4th
Priority at this point. I am saying that if we can improve their situation and
make it more friendly to their needs, maybe those 100 people who played OG
constantly will come back. Maybe those 12 people who played V:TES all
convention long will come back and do it again. Maybe the people who came and played
D&D for 72 hours straight in OG will come back. Let's find out. One thing
we need to do is find someone to "run" an OG department. Someone who will go
to the boards and listen to what is being said or what is needed for OG to
become healthy again. Then we can address the situation better. Second,
let's give it some space of it's own and mark it on the map so people see we
are taking reviving OG seriously. When that is seen, they WILL start talking
about it and we'll hear what we need to hear about it. John
